      ab: A new technology being developed in Japan may make communication easier between hearing-impaired and hearing people. According to Shan Lu of Japan's Communications Research Laboratory, the technology will translate Japanese sign language into speech and vice versa. The idea is that the system will recognize speech and translate it into sign language, which will be displayed via an animated character on a video screen, for example. In the reverse situation, the system will have to recognize and interpret sign language and translate it into words generated by a voice synthesizer. Although the voice technologies already exist, the sign language elements of the system require further development.
