| Sumario: | Five major lessons can be taken from the “Y2K and You” campaign for the local government community, an 18 month national effort to prepare for the year 2000 (Y2K) problem at the local level. Emergency preparation systems have been greatly enhanced and upgraded. In addition, the Y2K effort has enabled small and big jurisdictions alike to create an inventory and upgrade critical information technology infrastructure. In most cases, the inventory extended way beyond the physical infrastructure: Data flows and connections to other entities have been extensively identified, catalogued, and analyzed. Local governments have been forced to learn how to deal with major technology issues in a coordinated, enterprise manner. Finally, looking to the future, the opportunities of the Internet are unlocking new possibilities for redefining service delivery at the local government level.
