In computing, magnetic memory chips are set to challenge the supremacy of traditional dynamic-RAM chips. Booting up a computer takes a lot of time because the computer's operating system has to be loaded from its hard disk into its random access memory (RAM) each time the machine is switched on. RAM is an electric form of memory and so is volatile. Therefore, the task has been to build non-volatile high-speed memories that would allow computers to be turned on and off like televisions. Motorola, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard are developing magnetic RAM (MRAM) that seems set to become the non-volatile technology of choice. However, there is still some way to go before the technology goes into mass production. Detail of how MRAM works are provided. pubtype: Periodical doctype: Article src: R language: English refInfo: copyright: @attributes: flag: N holdings: @attributes: islocal: N |
