Turnitin is a leading California-based anti-plagiarism software business. It's product scrutinizes students' essays, compares them with reams of other academic documents, and highlights instances of replication and obvious paraphrasing. It has seen its subscriber base increase by 25 percent within the first quarter of 2002. In the U.K., the Joint Information Systems Committee, which is responsible for advising universities on information technology has tested Turnitin software in five colleges. The actual extent of academic dishonesty is discussed.
