ab: A study was conducted to investigate stress, coping responses, and social support variables as predictors of psychological stress among a Mexican Americans. Data were drawn from a structured questionnaire that incorporated the Beck Depression Inventory and the Hispanic Stress Inventory and that was administered to Mexican American males and females from a lower socioeconomic group. Findings indicated that although there were no significant differences between men and women in terms of the rate of depressive symptoms, men and women did differ in terms of the sources of stress and social support affiliated with depression. Women tended to both experience stress and seek social support in the household context, whereas for men, stress from work and support from relatives outside the household seemed to be more salient factors.
