ab: Microsoft and Apple announced in 2001 that they would be launching new operating systems for their computers. Microsoft's new Windows XP, announced in February, will come as standard on nearly all new PCs by the second half of 2001; and on March 24, Apple will launch its Mac OS X, the latest version of its operating system for Macintosh computers. The two announcements represent the culmination of time-consuming and drastically overdue efforts by both companies to modernize their operating systems. Both companies are hopeful that their new operating systems will increase sales of new computers and revitalize the struggling PC industry.
