      ab: On June 14, 2001, the latest attempt to join computers together was unveiled. Firms have been able to combine several computers in order to process huge amounts of data, but adding new machines to such clusters is complicated and is liable to cause systems to crash. Oracle's newly unveiled software technology, called Real Application Clusters, will offer reliability and scalability in one package. The technology makes clustering possible for corporate computing systems that keep track of orders or the supply chain by letting machines share the same short-term memory, or “cache.” This makes it easier for them to stay in sync, and firms can quickly add new computers without having to readjust their systems or compromise on reliability. Furthermore, the more computers that are added, the more reliable the system becomes. How this approach could fundamentally alter the economics of information technology, according to Carl Olofson, an analyst with research firm IDC, is outlined.
