| Sumario: | On September 19, 2002, Sun Microsystems, a computer maker, unveiled a new sort of operating system called N1, which will make it much easier to run corporate data centers, thus eliminating much of the work now done by armies of systems administrators. N1's key concept is “virtualisation”—creating pools of resources that can be used as needed—and this is carried out by automating the work of systems administrators. Details of how Sun has developed this new system and of its likely consequences for the IT industry are provided, and similar products being developed by IBM and HP are noted.
