| Sumario: | A sequence of two-level confirmatory factor models was applied to an analysis of data on self-esteem collected in a sample of Swiss students. Findings revealed that a one-factor model of self-esteem with an extra orthogonal method or response-style factor of negatively worded items provided an adequate description of within-class differences in self-esteem. It was also demonstrated that a general factor of self-esteem was enough to capture school class differences in self-esteem at between-class levels. It was concluded that the social context—school class—has a role in forming students' self-esteem. |
