| Sumario: | Confidentiality and privacy are in greater danger than ever because of two security issues inherent in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations, effective since April 2003. The first issue arises from the fact that health care providers have to use the Internet for billing purposes and sharing information. Second, and contrary to HIPAA's purported intent, is the issue of private health information access. According to a statement issued by Citizens for Health, individuals' personal health information may routinely be used and disclosed without notice or consent and against the individual's will.
