      ab: The prevalent, systematic incompetence of software design can be explained by the astonishing weakness of the tools available to software developers. As the complexity of software projects has escalated, it has become impossible for even the most gifted team of programmers to keep track of the millions of lines of code necessary to run the software. Firms must develop reliable tools that can handle millions of lines of code and requirements that can shift, sometimes alarmingly, during a project's time frame. Details are provided of three main trends determining the future of software development and giving hope to those who supervise big software projects: awareness of the need to focus on the lifecycle of a piece of software; the move toward automating the testing of software; and the emergence of open-source code.
