Invented over 2,500 years ago in China, the extraordinarily complex play of this game has previously confounded computer programs. Now, however, programmers are making impressive strides with a form of statistical sampling known as the Monte Carlo method. Already, a new generation of fast programs has emerged that play particularly well on small versions of the Go board. In time, humanity may have to concede victory to artificial intelligence on yet another front.
