Data were obtained from a survey of 315 low-income parents who were recruited from a larger study. Findings revealed that the internal consistency of the scale was adequate for use in research contexts even though it consists of just five items, and the scale showed evidence of validity on key indicators of child development. Findings also indicated that the summary score of parental modernity is a unidimensional factor and can be compared across mothers and fathers when the last item is excluded. Findings suggested that the measure could be used in evaluating the effectiveness of more authoritative parenting classes.
