| Sumario: | A study compared newspaper reporters' perception of how their publications were covering city government news in 1997 and 2007. Replicating a survey from 1997, city hall reporters at 104 daily newspapers were asked in 2007 to evaluate their newspaper's coverage of city government, and data from the two time periods was compared. Taken together, the 2007 and 1997 surveys suggest a long-term decrease in journalists reporting on city hall, even as the amount of space devoted to this news at small dailies remains about the same and declines at medium and large dailies. This is consistent with reports of shrinking staff sizes at dailies due to falls in advertising revenue. The 2007 data also suggest that these trends might be affecting city-hall coverage at medium-sized dailies more than at small dailies.
