Sumario:On February 8, General Magic, an Apple Computer spin-off that has grown into an alliance with AT&T, Matsushita, Motorola, Philips, and Sony, announced its Telescript and Magic Cap software, which the alliance hopes will become the standard for “personal intelligent communicators” such as the Apple Newton. The Newton will eventually be a hand-held, all-in-one computer, electronic notepad, diary, and fax capable of communicating over the airwaves like a cellular telephone. The first Newton, however, will be little more than an electronic organizer with the ability to link its diary, address pad, and notebook and will likely sell for about $600. Moreover, Apple may be beaten to the market by EO, a start-up in Mountain View, California. EO plans to launch its Personal Communicator 440 in April; for $1,999, buyers will get a slightly more sophisticated device than the basic Newton but will still have to pay another $1,300 for a cellular link.
