| Sumario: | An evaluation of the ethical codes of four major organizations of computer professionals in America indicates the need for a more comprehensive and standardized code of conduct within this profession. The ethical codes of the Data Processing Management Association, the Institute for Certification of Computer Professionals, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the Information Technology Association of America were compared along their stated obligations to society, the employer, clients, colleagues, the professional organization, and the profession. All four of the ethical codes lack priorities among the subjects of moral obligation. Generally, the absence of a well-established professional code can be attributed to the relative youth of the information technology field and to a lack of public awareness of the need for such a code.
