Summary:Personal computers today are faster and have more memory than those of even a few years ago, but software has grown to fill the space available. Software is growing because firms are scrambling to cram extra features into each new version of their applications as they try to set their products apart. Contributing to the process is the advent of multimedia PCs and Microsoft's Windows operating system, which relies on memory-gobbling graphics to communicate with users. The software bloat hurts productivity for the three-quarters of PC owners with older machines and increases the likelihood of bugs. Although high-level computer languages like C and C++ also require more memory than the Assembler language of early applications, they have too many other advantages to consider reverting. One solution may be to break down the barriers between software packages, but the best solution may lie in object-oriented programming.
