The study sample were a subsample of 763 married couples with husbands aged from 55 to 72 years and wives aged from 50 to 72 years from the National Survey of Families and Households. The results indicated higher dependence perceptions for husbands among couples with retired husbands. Wives' assessment of marital dependence is more sensitive than that of husbands to shifts in the provider role status of the latter.
