| Sumario: | Software agents, which are autonomous computer programs that automatically perform such tasks as sorting their users' electronic mail, are becoming increasingly sophisticated. General Magic, a software company in California, has pushed agent technology as far as any company yet by developing a commercial standard for “intelligent” software agents. Traditional software agents simply direct information and sometimes activate a program already present elsewhere, but General Magic's agents will run as complete programs on any computer running the company's Telescript operating system. Eventually, agents performing similar tasks will likely be designed to deal with each other, with minimal human intervention.
