Sumario:The writers discuss national survey results of adolescent telephone hotlines and examine an organizational case study of an existing adolescent hot line program that uses adolescent volunteers to answer all calls. The findings of the national survey based on 54 operational sites indicated that only 10 percent of hot lines exclusively use peers to answer phones. However, an in-depth analysis of the helpline known as Teen Line in Northwest Ohio demonstrated that the lack of social distance between the callers and the volunteers enabled them to overcome ethnic and class differences and avoid the alienation that callers might feel toward professional service providers. It is concluded that teenage volunteers are an underutilized resource for adolescent preventive health care and that they themselves can personally benefit from their volunteer experiences.
