| Sumario: | The writer presents some personal recollections of Emanuel Geltman, one of the founding editors and the first managing editor of Dissent, who died on September 6, 1995, aged 81, and discusses his contributions to the journal and to the socialist project. Geltman loved to talk, particularly to those who were new to Dissent, but he was not talking just for the sake of entertainment: His conversations provided an education about the history of Dissent and the history of the American Left in the 20th century. He was a superb editor, and part of what made him so good was his temperament and character. Although he did not do much writing in his later years, his editorial skills were evident in the works of many of the contributors to Dissent.
