| Summary: | Themes identified as part of the Hastings Center's workshop on ethical issues in human genetics in October 1971 continue to remain relevant today. The workshop focused on genetic counseling and the uses of genetic information. Although much has changed since the workshop was held, 2 themes have remained constant: the use of simple stories that attempt to link genes to complex behaviors and traits and the practice of using genetics to explain or justify social inequalities or more mundane matters regarding health. The meaning of a gene for someone's life cannot be understood in isolation. |
