| Summary: | An examination of the interpretation of C.G. Jung's archetype of the shadow in two episodes of the original Star Trek series. Both episodes address the confrontation and assimilation of the shadow by the ego, which initiates the process leading to psychic wholeness and mental health. This issue is of universal concern because it focuses on the origin and nature of evil in the world and the individual's responsibility for confronting his/her humanity, however uncomfortable that may be for the ego, and incorporating those negative aspects of himself/herself into the conscious personality. It is only by accepting this psychological task that all the evil in the world can be reduced and a just peace be attained.
