| Sumario: | Popular culture has particular functions and it exists for a reason. The primary reason that it exists is capitalism—it is a means by which culture can generate profit. However, once in place, popular culture then contributes to several other important social functions, including norm generation, boundary maintenance, ritual development, innovation, and social change. The hugely successful Harry Potter novels, written by J. K. Rowling, not only serve as a powerful example of the commodification of culture that is widespread in late capitalism but also demonstrate how popular culture has become necessary and highlight the important role that popular culture plays in social cohesion.
