      ab: Biometrics are physical characteristics such as fingerprints that can distinguish one person from another and help law enforcement officials to identify criminals. Biometric technology provides new opportunities for law enforcement and crime prevention by accurately identifying people when they engage in such activities as cashing checks, collecting welfare benefits, using automated teller machines, crossing borders, signing on to computer networks, or entering secure buildings. Numerous vendors now produce a range of biometric systems, the most common of which identify or authenticate users by their fingerprints, eyes, hands, faces, or voices. Biometrics work well, and the systems currently on the market can successfully identify and authenticate people with a high degree of accuracy. Biometric technology used in criminal identification can save time and help to solve crimes that might remain unsolved using traditional police methods. It can help agencies in both the private and public sector to protect identities, solve crimes, safeguard computer databases and networks, secure entrances to borders and buildings, and deter fraud.
