Sumario:A study was conducted to examine whether both increasing- and decreasing-loudness aftereffects have frequency-dependent and frequency-independent components. The three participants had hearing sensitivity within normal limits as measured by a Kamplex model BAC2C audiometer. Findings revealed the existence of both the aforementioned components. Despite separation between adapting and test frequencies of up to two octaves, measurements were always different after decreasing and increasing sound-level adaptation, such that frequency functions for the two directions of adaptation never crossed. Evidence from other negative adaptation effects in the auditory modality indicated that an explanation of the current aftereffects needs at least two mechanisms: Frequency-dependent components may reflect sensory processing, but frequency-independent components may be of nonsensory origin.
