      ab: A study was conducted to examine the effect of a gradual increase in the amount of input information to a single channel at two levels of living systems, organism and group. Data were drawn from experiments in which subjects were faced with simple mathematical problems to solve in a given time interval that was decreased for each successive exposure, causing an increase in the information input rate. It was expected that the output rate would increase at first but after a while become constant and that the groups would have a lower channel capacity than the organisms. Findings revealed that the possible output rate depended upon the living system's emotional reactions. A state of confusion was noted at both levels as the input rate reached a critical level. The output rate at both levels rose slowly after the state of confusion, supporting the expectation that the output rate becomes constant after some time. The information processing issue may be more complicated than was conceptualized by J. G. Miller.
