A study was conducted to examine how asset accumulation modifies the return destinations of migrants and the contribution that asset accumulation may make to peripheral, capital-poor regions. Data were drawn from a sample of return migrants present in urban areas in 21 provinces of Spain in 1978....

ab: A study was conducted to examine how asset accumulation modifies the return destinations of migrants and the contribution that asset accumulation may make to peripheral, capital-poor regions. Data were drawn from a sample of return migrants present in urban areas in 21 provinces of Spain in 1978. The results reveal that return migrants with savings have a higher probability of residing in birthplace regions, which are inclined to be lagging and less developed regions. In addition, policies that encourage savings among migrants are liable to encourage return migration that is dispersed across regions of out-migration instead of being concentrated in major urban areas. Without savings, the rate of return to less developed regions would be very low.
