      ab: A study was conducted to determine how participants would choose the saturation of one color when instructed to match, rather than balance, the saturation of a second color when the two differed in area and hue. Participants were 16 college undergraduate and graduate students. In the first experiment, in which stimuli of complementary colors were used, participants consistently chose higher saturation stimuli for large areas to match lower saturation stimuli in smaller areas. In the second experiment, better saturation matches were obtained if subjects fixated and stimuli were presented for very brief periods of time. In the third experiment, larger color contrast effects were obtained with hue pairs that were closer to complementary than with hue pairs that were more nearly the same. The results agree with the interpretation that biases in relative saturation selected to match stimuli of different relative size are largely caused by negative afterimages of the larger stimulus having a greater effect on the apparent saturation of the smaller stimulus.
