Participants were 16 college undergraduate and graduate students. In the first experiment, in which stimuli of complementary colors were used, participants consistently chose higher saturation stimuli for large areas to match lower saturation stimuli in smaller areas. In the second experiment, better saturation matches were obtained if subjects fixated and stimuli were presented for very brief periods of time. In the third experiment, larger color contrast effects were obtained with hue pairs that were closer to complementary than with hue pairs that were more nearly the same.
