| Sumario: | Part of a special issue on technology and planning. Discussions of the interaction between technology and planning frequently emphasize the use of information technologies but assume that these are simply tools that planners employ. In fact, it can be argued that technology is a dynamic force that restructures both cities and mindsets of city planning to a greater extent than is realized and that planners must be better at taking a step backward and putting technology in its place. Indeed, technology must be watched carefully to ensure that its power does not overshadow social and environmental values in the urban development context and to ensure that its concomitant mindsets do not overwhelm the planning profession itself. |
