Data were obtained from analysis of two areas of southwestern Utah, one with gated mines and the other with ungated mines. Findings revealed a need for a combination of techniques to meet long-term monitoring objectives: infrared event counters are suitable for recording relative bat activity inside mines over periods of time with minium observer disturbance and cost but are not reliable for obtaining information on bat behavior through gated entrances or absolute numbers and species. Findings are discussed in detail.
