| Sumario: | To be confident that change in the global climate is real, and to attribute it to human influence, several issues—such as whether the global temperature record is accurate and the degree of change that can be expected from natural causes—must be considered. To convincingly demonstrate that humans are the cause of global climate change means utilizing a two-part process based on the system and probability theory: First, it must be possible to reject the idea that influences other than humans are responsible; second, it must be demonstrated that human factors are consistent with the observed changes. Studies that can be undertaken to determine how much of the observed change in surface air temperature can be attributed to anthropogenic forcings are outlined.
