Sumario:Part of a special section on how new technologies influence the employment relationship. The writers discuss Canadian legal issues relating to employee e-mail and Internet use. They argue that increasing use of the Internet and e-mail in the workplace has created complex issues relating to the potential liability of employers due to the improper use of these technologies by their employees, and to the privacy of employees, and that these need to be addressed by all employers. They contend that risks associated with employee misuse of these technologies can be reduced if they are issued clear and concise e-mail and Internet use policies, They conclude that it is necessary for the Canadian courts and arbitrators to understand the new technology and its associated problems, and to strike a balance between employee and employer rights.
