Sumario:Part of a special section on technological change and employment conditions in traditionally heavily unionized industries. The writer explores the transformation of industrial relations in Canadian metal mining and the nature of the industry's future industrial relations system. He offers a descriptive model of the evolution of technology that outlines three stages of technological development and the set of subsequent technologies that hold the prospect for generating fundamental workplace change. In addition, he examines how these developments are impacting the union-management balance in industrial relations and changing the union's role. Finally, he evaluates the direction of future industrial relations in the industry, discussing the future of unions as part of the “new” industrial relations and highlighting some issues for unions to consider.
