Summary:	In order to enable officers to respond more effectively to individuals with mental illness, the police department in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has committed itself to the development of an advanced mental health response school. The “operational triangle” is the guiding principle for the development of the school, a principle that places safety at the start of interactions between citizens and law enforcement officers, who then apply communication skills to establish an effective relationship with the subject, before directing interpersonal skills toward problem solving.
