| Sumario: | Part of a special section on power and identity via electronic communication. The writer describes the use of information technology in a strike by 107 newsroom employees at the Calgary Herald, Calgary, Canada, in 1999 and 2000. She concludes that electronic communications had a huge impact on the strikers, because, although unable to communicate on the picket line because of the company's electronic eavesdropping, they were able to keep in touch with one another openly and frequently through a dedicated website and e-mail—thus maintaining solidarity in an unprecedented way. |
