| Sumario: | Part of a special section on the implications of modern technology for corrections agencies. Over the years, the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) has made steady improvements to a conventional, centralized system to bring about a robust, full-functioning management information system. In the early 1970s, it implemented its Offender-based Correctional Information System (OBCIS), and staff began redeveloping OBCIS in the mainframe data base environment in 1987. The SCDC purposefully did not throw out existing systems in favor of the latest technological chic. Instead of redeveloping current systems to utilize new hardware technology, SCDC will continue to expand the present information system by enhancing connectivity and system integration to allow use of new technology. The functions provided by SCDC's centralized offender management system are outlined.
