| Summary: | Part of a special section on the implications of modern technology for corrections agencies. Investment in the military's R&D programs has given rise to, among other things, important spin-off technologies that are useful for law enforcement and for society in general. Due to the greater similarity between today's military missions and civil law enforcement, the military's R&D programs currently include systems and technologies that are useful for “operations other than war,” such as civil disturbances and peacekeeping missions. In 1994, the Department of Justice entered into an agreement with the Department of Defense to develop dual-use technologies for law enforcement. In general, however, corrections research is not as well organized or as effective in attracting funds as military research. A number of strategies that corrections policy makers should consider in order to capitalize on available opportunities are discussed.
