| Sumario: | Part of a special section on anthropological research on free software or open source software in widely disparate social spaces and global locations. In this introduction, it is noted that the contributing articles reveal the significant relevance of the people and practices explored therein to many large and small theoretical issues long of interest in anthropology and social theory more generally. The two broad concerns of the articles—field-site and anthropology as cultural critique—are highlighted. In addition, the nature of this software is explained, and three salient dates that situate its history are noted. Finally, the issues addressed in each of the contributing articles are outlined.
