| Summary: | San Francisco's new public library, which is due to open in April 1996, has been designed with the 21st century in mind. All seven floors of the library will be equipped with the latest in digital technology. The library will provide patrons with computer catalog terminals, local databases, a periodicals index, and multimedia workstations. It will also feature a 300 seat auditorium, meeting rooms, an exhibit gallery, and an audio and visual production studio. Facilities for patrons with laptop computers will allow them to sit anywhere and browse the library's offerings, and anyone with a modem will be able to dial into the library from home. Other features of the library include special facilities for the sight impaired and those with learning disabilities; a literary center; a Newcomer's Center, focusing on English as a second language; and a “browsing library.” Much of the money for the furnishings and equipment for the library was donated by San Francisco's diverse cultural groups.
