ab: In Britain, the leader of the Labour Party, Tony Blair, has proposed that British Telecom (BT) should connect every hospital, library, and school to cable for free in order to increase information access. Blair overlooked several problems, including the fact that in return BT is to be freed from restrictions stopping it from carrying video and entertainment services to offices and homes—services currently provided by cable companies. This will result in a massive loss to the Treasury because cable companies' license fees will become worth a great deal less once BT starts competing.
