| Sumario: | Part of a special issue on human-animal relationships. The edited text of a keynote address given at a conference entitled “In the Company of Animals” at the New School for Social Research on April 6, 1995, is presented. The writer discusses how humans always perceive animals, as well as everything else, in their own terms. The writer concludes that, given that humans are a contingent product of history, some of the deepest and most abstract issues with which humans are concerned are actually discussions about historical particulars and not the transcending generalities that they have always been assumed to be.
