| Sumario: | The Government Technology Transfer Program has made a promising approach available to law enforcement to help address the crime problem. The program enables the Department of Defense and commercial organizations to cooperate to assist law enforcement through the use of defense-related technology. As part of this program, the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) operates the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center and four regional technology centers nationwide. The regional centers employ existing facilities and resources to offer specialty backing to the NIJ's Office of Science and Technology and to the law enforcement and corrections field. Rome Laboratory hosts the Northeast Regional Center. For over 40 years, the laboratory has developed technologies that have provided the crucial eyes, ears, and voices for the U.S. military, and now some of these defense technologies are being converted for law enforcement uses. A number of these technologies and their applications are discussed.
