ab: Commencing in 1954, a roughly twenty-five year period began, in which there were no less than a dozen significant studies or manipulations and innovations in police patrol deployment and tactics. While these experiments and innovative deployments have proven successful, or at least showed significant promise, policing has not seen any similar levels of introspection since. In the past twenty-five years, policing has seen nowhere near the previous level of research regarding patrol deployment and tactics. As such, in seeking to become more innovative in consideration and deliberation of police patrol deployment, it seems that history provides some of the best insight for the future. As policing practitioners look for future insight as to innovations, they need look no farther than over their shoulder, glancing at history. Reprinted by permission of the publisher.
