Description
Summary:The port complex of Los Angeles, California, is possibly the most attractive target for economic terrorism given the volume of cargo that passes through it. An attack there would sever America's umbilical cord to world trade, crippling the national economy and have a ripple-on effect worldwide. Estimates of the economic costs of an attack may be too low and President George W. Bush's administration has addressed concerns about the security of ports inadequately. Although those in the Department of Homeland Security express confidence that the LA port is much safer than it was in 2002, many facts and many people controvert this. According to Bill Ellis, the second-in-command at the Port of Long Beach, the funding provided for improving port security is hugely insufficient.
