| Sumario: | In October 1995, Housing and Urban Development secretary Henry Cisneros introduced the idea of public housing “campuses of learners” at a seminar. The concept uses housing developments as centers for educational opportunities, providing residents with access to training, information, social service resources, and counseling, all designed to help them become self-sufficient. The establishment of campuses of learners utilizes the surrounding community's resources, taps into local educational institutions, and aids family members in becoming self-sufficient members of society. Details of the common elements in the varied approaches adopted by six local housing agencies for establishing campuses of learners in their housing developments and of the Housing Plus concept, which was created in South Bend, Indiana, and is the centerpiece of the Alonzo Watson Housing University, are provided.
