ab: The writer discusses vocational and technical training for women prisoners. Programs for women prisoners still fall into the following five major categories: institutional maintenance; education, mostly remedial; vocational training, most frequently geared toward stereotypical jobs; treatment; and medical care. Results of a nationwide survey conducted for the U.S. indicate that 94 percent of programs list the provision of at least entry-level job skills as one of their stated goals. Recommendations made by respondents for their programs that should be taken into account in the establishment of any new programs are outlined.
