      ab: The task of policing mass transit systems presents particular challenges to law enforcement. The main aims of policing mass transit are to improve transit system safety and to reduce the fear of crime on transit systems. To gauge the overall safety of a transit system, police can employ strategic measures such as a statistical database of crime and disorder, a tally of ridership losses and increases, and a survey of riders' and employees perceptions of fear. With an effective strategic measurement protocol in operation, police managers can concentrate on developing proactive strategies to raise rider security including operating a high-profile, day and night police patrol; monitoring and controlling juveniles on the system; strengthening special legislation to encourage orderly behavior on the system; creating special prosecution teams for offenses occurring on mass transit systems; maintaining the aesthetic qualities of the location; and spreading the perception that the transit system is a part of the community that it serves.
