| Sumario: | Part of a special section on the legacy of Prussian naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt's sojourn in the Americas, 1799–1804. Despite the challenges posed by the broad range and complexity of Humboldt's legacy, the Humboldt Digital Library < http://www.avhumboldt.net > seeks to produce an efficient and comprehensive edition of Humboldt's works to enable users to undertake in-depth searches for specific topics, names, or keywords. Several navigation tools will be employed to direct users to relevant texts, locations, images, and maps. Although initially centered on Humboldt's works in English translation, the project will eventually incorporate the works originally written in French, together with translations into German and Spanish. The entire dynamic system will enable users to navigate to related information through the Internet. The writers discuss Humboldt's unique historical role and the ongoing creation of the digital library.
