      ab: Part of a special issue on politics, science, and public policy. The writer discusses the need for a new solution to the problem of energy production in the face of global warming. He observes that the solution will require the biggest engineering effort in history, a effort that is international in scope with sufficient inducements for developing behemoths India and China to participate. He goes on to suggest some possible future sources of energy, including coal with carbon capture and sequestration, nuclear power, and renewable energy. The writer concludes that he is optimistic enough about technology to believe that policies based on science and engineering can solve problem of producing energy and preventing further climate change.
